Germany, July 17th. With shallow breaths, I fight against the ever-increasing fervor of the snowstorm. I get pelted by tiny ice crystals as I try desperately to put one foot in front of the other. Sinking more than ankle deep into the slush, each step harder than the last. The blizzard will not give way. My vision begins fading away as my glasses fog up. The temperature is unbearable. What fool would embark on such a journey in weather like this? What idiot would try to record the Voice of someone battling a blizzard, in 40 °C (104 °F) heat without air conditioning? Oh, right, this guy!
Misplaced Seasons
That’s right! As a massive heatwave hit Germany, and we collectively regretted our lack of air-con, I was standing (and sweltering) in the booth. My character: A young man fighting his way through a snowstorm, desperately searching for his lost love. A gripping tale of what happens beneath the icy veil. And as it turns out, the heat wasn’t as much of a problem as I first thought.
A Voice Acting Paradox
As it turns out, when it comes to your voice, the difference between panting and grunting from fighting your way through miles of snow chasing after your beloved and heat exhaustion is not that noticeable. In fact, it may have even helped me, as just like my protagonist, I too was fighting against extreme weather despite my better judgment. Nevertheless, I still find it ironic that my performance of combating a possibly magical blizzard was in part inspired by a heatwave.
